  Number of day's sales in accounts receivable-I talk about this in the "Accounts receivable turnover" section earlier in the chapter-the quicker a company collects on its account receivable, the less likely that it will have to borrow or factor to meet short-term obligations. Your accounting instructor may also refer to this activity measure as the average collection period for accounts receivable or the number of day's sales outstanding. Small difference, but I know form experience that sometimes the slightest change can be disconcerting for the novice accounting student. Say that the Fallen Dolls Sculpture company wants to tune up collections in 2022 by evaluating 2021 number of day's sales. Fallen's accountant needs are two key figures:2021 sales($329,560) and their accounts receivable balance at December 31,2021 ($43,465).Here's how this days' extravaganza plays out:First,divide 2021 sales by 365 days, which is the standard days, in a year for most accounting calculations of this nature,to get average days' sales.This equals 902.90($329,560/36).Next,divide accounts receivable at December 31,2021 by your average days' sales figure from above. This calculation gives you 48 days($43,465/902.90).So is that 48 number of days' sales in accounts receivable good or bad?It really depends on the business. My clients like to keep their days' in accounts receivable to 30 to 35 days. Depending on Fallen's client base, 48 days may be good. In any event, Fallen's accountant and management now have the information they need to make decisions going forward in 2022.
